En mars 1951 le lithographe marseillais Jo Berto porte à Vallauris une plaque de zinc et demande à Picasso d’y réaliser un dessin à but d’en effectuer une lithographie. Le projet ne sera jamais finalisé du fait d’un conflit avec le lithographe parisien de Picasso. Ce dernier en autorisera toutefois un tirage de 4 épreuves qu’il conservera. En dédommagement il ne rayera pas la plaque et l’offrira avec le dessin original à Jo Berto, avec pour condition que ce dernier le conserve et ne l’exploite pas. Toutefois à la fin des années 1970 la veuve de Jo Berto cédera ce dessin à son actuel propriétaire.

Généralement les dessins originaux ayant servi de matrices lithographiques sont rayés après tirage des épreuves autorisées. Ceci pour éviter des retirages non autorisés. Aux dires de Claude Picasso, fils de l’artiste, il n’existe pas au monde d’autre exemple de plaque lithographique de son père non rayée. Il s’agit donc ici d’un objet exceptionnel au sens premier du terme. On peut noter qu’une épreuve d’essai, réalisée juste avant les 4 tirages autorisés et conservés par Picasso, est également jointe à ce dessin, les deux constituant un ensemble « négatif/positif » particulièrement rare.

Ce dessin n’est pas signé car il était prévu initialement en tant qu’original pour le tirage de lithographies. Or ces dernières sont généralement datées et signées individuellement, la matrice, de ce fait, n’ayant pas à l’être.

On peut noter qu’une technique mixte sur panneau de bois de la même série, étonnement proche dans la composition, a été vendue le 12/11/2005 aux enchères chez Christie’s New York pour 1.445.000 USD

Word of the merchant :

In March 1951 the Marseille lithographer Jo Berto brings to Vallauris a plate of zinc and asks Picasso to make a drawing on it in the aim to perform a lithography. The project will never be finalized because of a conflict with Picasso's Parisian lithographer. The latter will however authorise an edition of 4 prints that he will keep. In compensation he will not scratch the plate and will offer it and its original drawing to Jo Berto, with the condition that the latter retains it and does not exploit it. However in the late 1970s Jo Berto's widow will sale this drawing to its current owner.

In general, the original drawings used as lithographic matrixes are crossed out after the edition of the authorized prints. This is to avoid unauthorized reprints. According to Claude Picasso, son of the artist, there is no other example in the world of a lithographic plate of his father not scratched. This is therefore an exceptional object in the primary sense of the term. It can be noted that a trial test, carried out just before the 4 prints authorized and kept by Picasso, is also attached to this drawing, the two constituting a "negative / positive" set that is particularly rare.

This drawing is not signed because it was originally planned to be an original lithographs matrix. The prints are subsequently dated and signed individually, the matrix, therefore, not having to be.
